Sound and Beyond

Hints and Tips

You can structure your practice sessions however you like. Sound and Beyond is designed to make practicing convenient. There is no order or timelines for the modules. You are in control of your progress and you can practice all modules concurrently. For optimal results, it’s best to practice for short periods each day.

Let’s get started!

First, use the assessment on page 14 of the User Guide to determine the modules you wish to begin with.
Then, take the auditory assessment to set your levels in three starting modules.
Or, choose a module and take a test to set your level.

Setting up:
For optimal screen clarity, be sure that your screen resolution (located under display in your computer setup) is set to one of the following:

  • 1024 x 768 (average computer)
  • 1280 x 1024 (newer computers)
  • 800 x 600 (older computers)
To set a comfortable TV/Hi Fi cable volume:
  • Make sure the TV/Hi Fi cable volume is set to 0.
  • Connect the plug marked ‘TV’ to the sound card output jack (or, if available, the headphone jack of the computer speaker).
  • Connect the plug marked ‘Cochlear’ to the external input jack of the speech processor.
  • Turn the computer volume to maximum.
  • Open your Sound and Beyond program and select the ‘Pure Tones’ module from the left side of the screen.
  • Select ‘Preview’ from under the yellow bar at the top of the screen. Select the ‘Play’ button from the right side of the screen.
  • Slowly increase the volume on the TV/Hi Fi cable until the tones are at a comfortable loudness.

Reporting results:
You can print your results at any time to share with your clinician. To print a report:

  • Select ‘Print’ from the menu at the top of the page.
  • If your clinician is not familiar with Sound and Beyond, select the ‘Detailed Report’ which includes information about the program.
  • Select ‘Print’ and the report will print on your default printer.
